Fact: We would not be able to tell the whole story of Nebraska’s children without community support. Grants, donations, corporate giving, and volunteers have fuelled our research and advocacy for 25 years. Voices for Children has been independently funded since it was founded by Kathy Bigsby Moore in 1987. We will mark our 25th Anniversary at our annual fundraising Gala on September 15, 2012.
But first, a little history…
We held our first Gala to mark the 15th Anniversary of the organization. Thanks to the collective creativity of committee members over the years, the theme of the Gala has evolved. We have seen the “Valentine Gala, ” “Spirit of the Jester,” and “A Work of Heart.” We have landed on “Spotlight Gala” for the third year now. Committee Members, Event Chairs, and Honorary Families have dedicated their time and resources to continually make this event a success. They each have a special place in our hearts.
In a bold move, we moved the annual fundraising event out of the hustle and bustle of Legislative Session, and into the fall. When Gala is here, the office is abuzz with volunteers revolving in and out of our door and non-traditional partners wanting to learn more about the work we do. We may have a beer distributor, an artist, and an attorney stop by on the same day.
In my personal opinion, the two most rewarding things about preparing for the Spotlight Gala are the passionate volunteers and the overwhelming support of the community. Both send a strong message that there is still work to be done on behalf of Nebraska’s children.
Together, we will continue to strive for the ideal–that all kids have the resources they need to grow into healthy, successful adults. We know our goals may seem improbable, but policy victories for children don’t just happen by accident. For 25 years, Voices for Children has been improving policies through skilled advocacy. We have not done it alone.
The 25th Anniversary Spotlight Gala will not only be an organizational milestone, but also a celebration of the power of collaboration and community engagement. We will mark this point in time as not only a look back at 25 years of accomplishments, but as a look forward to the next 25 years and a brighter future for Nebraska’s children.
