Voices for Children welcomes new Lutheran Volunteer

Hi, my name is Courtnay VanDeVelde. I am joining Voices for Children in Nebraska as a year-long full-time volunteer with Lutheran Volunteer Corps (LVC). My passion for helping children runs deep, specifically those with behavioral health issues, and I look forward to serving this year with Voices for Children as an advocate for children and families.

Prior to moving to Omaha, I worked at Partners in Excellence Autism Therapy Center as a Behavioral Therapist.  My main duties there focused on providing one-on-one direct care for children on the Autism spectrum. The company was funded through insurance payments, so I saw the direct impact that changes or cuts in health insurance had on children.

In the summer of 2011, I was fortunate to receive the opportunity to serve on a three week mission trip in Tanzania. As I explored the orphanages and other establishments for children in Tanzania, I found a continued passion for helping disadvantaged children. After leaving Tanzania, I wanted to find a way to be an advocate for children while expanding upon the values of sustainability, simplicity and community I had experienced in Tanzania. This lead me to join LVC and to my work at Voices for Children.

My interest in serving and working with people began during my college years as a Psychology and Women’s Studies student at Minnesota State University, Mankato.

Thank you to taking the time to share!
