All students should have the opportunity for academic success, but long-standing inequities in the educational system—like racial segregation and unequal school resources and academic opportunities—lead to greater challenges for students of color.

In order to “close the gap and get the cap,” we have to start investing in kids early – before they go to school. Early literacy skills reveal themselves even before kids start kindergarten. For example, kids growing up in middle- and high-income families hear three times the number of words than their lower income peers by the time they are 3 years old. By investing in early childhood programs, we can help make sure more kids are learning in their early years and on a path to greater academic success in the future.
