Voices for Children is honored to name Project Everlast Leadership Council as the recipient of the Youth Award. This recognition is unique in that it recognizes a group of youth for their outstanding leadership and not a single youth or young adult as in earlier years.
In 2002, the Nebraska Children and Families Foundation created a unique youth-led council to provide youth aging out of foster care a voice. This group brought together more than 40 community agencies came together to participate in a youth driven planning process that developed the Omaha Independent Living Plan, which then evolved into Project Everlast.
Today, Project Everlast gives older youth in foster care a forum to connect with one another, share stories, learn about living independently, and advocate for changes to the system that changed their life. These youth are passionate speakers and advocates for changes Nebraska’s foster care system – testifying a Legislative hearings and speaking to community groups across the state.
