Mind the gap in educational achievement

All students should have the opportunity for academic success, but long-standing inequities in the educational system—like racial segregation and unequal school resources and academic opportunities—lead to greater challenges for students of color.

Our latest infographic takes a look at where those gaps in academic achievement:

In order to “close the gap and get the cap,” we have to start investing in kids early – before they go to school.  Early literacy skills reveal themselves even before kids start kindergarten.  For example, kids growing up in middle- and high-income families hear three times the number of words than their lower income peers by the time they are 3 years old. By investing in early childhood programs, we can help make sure more kids are learning in their early years and on a path to greater academic success in the future.
