What a whirlwind pair of days in Scottsbluff!
First up Tuesday was the LR 37 hearing (for more on the hearing check out the story in the Scottsbluff Star Herald). Incredible stories from all of the public testifiers. A lot of people from the community came out to share their perspectives on the challenges of the child welfare and juvenile justices systems. Lots of ideas and interesting possible solutions to the struggles in the system ranging from improved early intervention to expanding the types of services available.
After the hearing, we spent a little time getting familiar with the terrain around Scottsbluff with trips to the top of Scottsbluff Monument and out to Chimney Rock to shoot a few of our upcoming videos for the Spotlight on Safety Series. Luckily, we weren’t blown off the top of Scottsbluff Monument when the wind picked up!
Today, we spent the morning with our friends at Community Action Partnership of Western Nebraska, learning about the unbelievable array of services that they provide children and families in the Panhandle. Then, it was off to the Scotts Bluff Juvenile Detention Center to see the struggles of providing juvenile services in rural communities up close and personal.
We have been very busy putting in some “windshield time” out west and will be ready to share our thoughts and reflections from the trip next week.
