Every year, we shine a spotlight on Nebraska’s children through a student art project funded by a generous grant from the Omaha Schools Foundation. As table centerpiece items for the annual Spotlight Gala, the student-made art symbolizes that Nebraska’s children are always our first priority and forever present in our minds.
This year, students from Bryan Middle School visited the Hot Shops Art Center for a tour and special art project where they painted frames with their favorite quote from DAR’s poem, The Power of a Loaded Brush. They learned about the importance of artistic expression and how to use it to overcome various obstacles.
The Power of a Loaded Brush
When one cannot walk, one can run with a loaded brush.
When one can only whisper, one can shout with a loaded brush.
When one is confused, one can make sense with a loaded brush.
When one cannot see, one’s vision becomes clearer with
a loaded brush.
When one can barely bend, one can dance with a loaded brush.
When one is silenced, one can sing with a loaded brush.
When one is angry, one can scream with a loaded brush.
When one cannot write, one can dictate with a loaded brush.
When one cannot cry, one can weep with a loaded brush.
When one is happy, one can laugh with a loaded brush.
When one is trapped, one can be freed with a loaded brush.

These centerpieces are now on sale at Voices for Children. You can purchase 2 frames for $25.
Purchasers will need to come by the Voices for Children office to select their unique frames.
Payment will be accepted by check or exact cash amount.
