Protect Kids from the Shutdown: SNAP and WIC Are at Risk
October 2, 2025 | Advocacy Alerts , Economic Stability
Children and families across the country are facing deep uncertainty as the federal government shutdown continues. Two of the most critical programs that keep kids fed and healthy — SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) and WIC (Women, Infants, and Children) — are at risk of disruption if Congress fails to act.
More than half of SNAP recipients are children, and WIC supports nearly half of all infants born in the United States. A lapse in funding could mean families being forced to choose between rent and food, and children going without the nutrition they need to grow, learn, and thrive.
SNAP benefits are confirmed for October 2025, but November benefits are at risk if the shutdown continues into the end of this month. At the same time, up to 12,000 Nebraskans employed by the federal government could miss paychecks on October 15. If the government does not reopen by then, families could turn to an emergency food system that is already stretched to the breaking point.
We cannot let this happen. Children should not pay the price for political gridlock.
Take Action:
- Call your members of Congress and demand that they immediately pass a funding bill that protects SNAP, WIC, and health care without cuts.
- Share your story if your family or community relies on these programs. Lawmakers need to hear the real impact from the people they represent.
- Spread the word on social media and with your networks. Use your voice to make sure kids and families stay at the center of this conversation.
Every day of inaction puts children’s health and well-being in jeopardy. Congress must do its job: end the shutdown and safeguard the nutrition and health care programs millions of kids and families rely on.
Kids can’t wait. Families can’t wait. We need action now.
