LB 837

Summary:

On Friday, the Health and Human Services Committee will hear testimony on LB 837, which proposes the creation of a task force to look at how Nebraska provides psychotropic drugs for wards of the state.

We know that a lot of kids in the foster care system have mental and behavioral health needs, and a task force could help ensure that kids get the right services and the right medications. What is alarming is the fact there is a national trend towards over medicating kids in foster care who don’t need drugs, are given drugs with dangerous side effects, or could benefit from other forms of treatment. Nebraska needs policies set in place that protect kids and ensure their mental health safety, and a task force is an important first step in that process.
